Bulgarian residency by investment is an option that allows non-EU citizens to “buy” residence permit /and later citizenship/ by investing in the economy of the country. The legislation offers various options depending on the size and type of the investment.

The easiest option for residency by investment in Bulgaria is obtaining a long-stay residence permit for a period of 1 year with an opportunity for a renewal every second year up to five years. Long-term residence permit for one year can be obtained by:

1. Investment in real estates. The minimum required amount of the investment is BGN 600 000 and the payment must be made via a Bulgarian bank institution.

2. Incorporation of a Bulgarian company with a minimum foundation capital of BGN 600 000, whereas the foreigner owns more than 50% of the company shares and the company has invested its capital into real estates on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria;

3. Investment in economically disadvantaged areas by incorporation of a company with a minimum required capital BGN 250000, and the company has invested the amount of the capital in real estates and has employed at least 5 Bulgarians for the duration of the residence permit of the investor.

4. Incorporation of a Bulgarian company regardless of the amount of the foundation capital and employment of at least 10 Bulgarians for the duration of the residence permit of the investor.

For the period of the long term stay (1 year) a Bulgarian Identity Card is issued. To receive a long stay permit the persons must have accommodation, mandatory health insurance, subsistence means with no need to use the social assistance system, to the amount not less than the minimal monthly salary, the minimal scholarship or pension under the Bulgarian legislation, for the term of stay.
